Action for Children demonise autism

Google for Dan action for children and you will see that there is a world wide condemnation of the latest action for children advert which describe, and demonstrates, that to be autistic is to be a RAGING MONSTER!

Be sure to read the comments.

This advert that left MLA in floods of tears and shouting over and over again

‘I AM NOT A BAD BOY, I AM A GOOD BOY’

‘I AM NOT A MONSTER!’

If you too feel outraged by the suggestions that the bullies, for instance, could beat Dan but for him to retaliate made him a monster, and he is was not a nice brother or son and how he had to have behaviour treatment, drop a line here and tell them so. Join the thousands who already have!

Stop the demonising of autistic people, get this advert pulled!

  1. There has been an excellent response to this advert…this is much better than the original

  2. Thanks for writing about this.

I’ve linked to your post on The Voyage.

    There’s a Facebook group too:

  3. This is an incident that happened at the school Dan ‘attended’ where his autism was ‘cured’

    http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/south-wales-news/rhymney-valley/2008/01/10/family-s-outrage-at-child-s-arrest-91466-20331758/

Do you those of you that could see no wrong with the advert still think he and his fellow inmates, sorry pupils, are being treated with compassion?

  4. Action for Children has made another ad that parents with MS find almost as horrifying: I haven’t seen it (I’m in the US, so they don’t have those ads here), but apparently it features a young girl who has to take care of her Mom because her Mom has MS. And Action for Children helps her. Parents are incensed because it implies that children automatically become carers for disabled parents (when they don’t, or shouldn’t have to).

The Facebook group focused on the MS parent ad is at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=51200447470

I suggest that the campaigns against both ads (the autism ad and the MS parent ad) would be more effective if they were to coordinate efforts in some fashion. I also suggest that letters should focus NOT ONLY on removing the two offensive ads but ALSO on urging Action for Children to consult more closely with disability groups in the future for ALL relevant ads.

  5. Yes I saw that advert and my first reaction was, where are social services and why have they not bought in carers?

I don’t think this is advert is a bad as the autism one because it does highlight the gap in care in our society and that some children are struggling alone. Where as the autism one blames Dan’s difficulties on him himself and gives the message across that his autism is entirely his fault and he can help his behaviour traits, thus making him a wicked, evil monster.

  6. Reports are filtering thought that Tony Attwood is slamming the Action for Children advert, although so far I have not been able to find any collaborating articles direct from Mr Attwood himself. I have no doubts he is but would prefer to post a definite writing rather than hear say.
